Distinguished and Famous people from Heritage Highway

🌟 Daniel Herbert and James Colbeck

Daniel Herbert and James Colbeck were skilled convict stonemasons assigned to the construction of Ross Bridge, completed in 1836. Working with a convict labour gang on John Lee Archer’s design, they helped create one of the Heritage Highway’s most recognisable structures. Herbert is especially associated with the bridge’s distinctive sandstone carvings. The surviving work gives both men a tangible place in the route’s history. It also directs attention from the officials whose names appeared on public works to the transported workers who shaped the stone.
